StoryFile Life is the new way for you to tell your own story in your own unique way.

From the day we are born to the day we die, we all have an unfolding story. Our first steps, first words, first day at school. Then come career choices, personal goals and achievements, friends and family, life partners, oh, and children too. There may be some disappointments, challenges with health, people we love and lose. Like a fingerprint, there is a pattern to each of our lives; but no two are the same. We are all unique in our own way.

For your StoryFile Life history to work as a conversational video it is necessary to do two things:

To get started there are some preliminaries.

First, we need to film you for ten seconds looking into the camera, as if you are listening to your audience (imagine your child, your mom, your best friend). It may feel really weird looking at yourself nodding wisely, but we need this! Second, it is also necessary to record you saying, “I cannot answer that, try something else.” That’s because all sorts of folks will ask you well, all sorts of questions, many of which you will not (yet) have answered. These recorded responses may seem a little strange, but they are necessary to make your StoryFile conversational video work. So let’s get them out of the way. Don’t worry, you can always come back and re-record them at any time.

Now to the building blocks of your ‘Life’ story.

Every StoryFile Life interview is made up of sets of questions known as “StoryLines”. A StoryLine is a set of questions that relate to a particular topic, such as marriage, career, children, etc. Each StoryLine is developed by an experienced oral historian. Storylines typically contain between 10 and 20 questions about each topic – not too many, not too few.

Imagine StoryLines as the building blocks that make up your story.

You can choose the StoryLines in any order. Some people like to work through their lives chronologically, from cradle to the present day.  Others prefer to choose their favorite topics first – grandchildren, sports and hobbies, faith and spirituality.  It really does not matter, build your interview any way that feels good to you. You can find a full list of StoryLines here.
StoryLines begin with the broadest phases of your life – childhood, youth, adulthood, middle age, old age.    Whether you are 85 years old reflecting upon what it was like to be 20, or you are 20 years old today, describing your life now, the questions in the StoryLine help you to describe each phase without having to think about it in detail, just answer the questions on the screen in front of you!
There are  StoryLine opics that may relate to you, but perhaps are not the same ones for your best friend. Let’s imagine you had the perfect wedding, the perfect marriage, the perfect kids, but your best friend Sally who also had the perfect wedding, then discovered she had married the wrong husband, and had no kids – or maybe it was the other way around. Whatever your experience, you get to choose your StoryLines.  You can describe the wedding, but not the divorce, or the divorce, but not the wedding.  So whether you choose ‘wedding bells’, ‘children’, ‘my cats’, ‘perfect hubby’, ‘divorce blues’, it is up to you, because you decide what is part of your StoryFile Life.
You control what you film and when. You can film yourself answering your entire life history in one day, or answer a few questions at a time for the rest of your life. There is no minimum nor maximum to the number of questions you answer at any one time.

So, what about your data privacy?

You have nothing to worry about. The StoryFile Life data infrastructure is private by default. We assume that what is yours is yours. Everything you create is private by default.

If you want to share your StoryFile Life interview among your closest friends, StoryFile has created StoryCircles. A StoryCircle is a trusted group of people that you invite individually via email – children, grandchildren, siblings. Only the people in the StoryCircle get to see your story. But among your circle, the people who attended the same wedding, the same vacation, the same graduation, get to talk about the same event in the same place as you! StoryFiles intersect with your family and friends.

You may decide you want to share your StoryFile Life interview on a social media platform – and there are lots of sharing options. Once you make any part of your StoryFile public, it is no longer protected by StoryFile’s privacy policy. That said, your friends and family will love interacting with you in a brand new way.

StoryFiles are always free and private to get started.

Scrap your scrapbook, enjoy StoryFile Life.
